Kanuka is open from 1st September – 30st May.
This is the only Glamping site located on Department of Conservation land in New Zealand. There are restrictions on the time we can operate on this DOC land but is still worth it for the location we have.
With the access to this stunning bush clad lake-edge glamping site only by boat or 3-hour hike and being set by your own private beach, this is one of the most stunning off-the-beaten-path campsites in New Zealand.
Set on Maori land, in a mystery location on the lake edge, Kanuka is secluded and peaceful. Beautiful native bush surrounds the glamping site, with the large, comfortable tent enjoying direct access to the lake.
The campsite consists of one large tent with a queen-sized bed. It's tastefully decorated and features elements of Maori design - beautiful natural materials and traditional flax weaving. A permanent camp kitchen, dining area and camp bathroom are set a short distance from the tent, providing everything you need for comfortable camping.
A stay at Kanuka is something very special. The discrete lake-edge location, with towering Pohutukawa trees, gives you the chance to really surround yourself in nature - and the magic of a truly amazing place.
There's plenty to occupy you during your stay at Kanuka!
Swim and relax in the crystal clear waters, explore the lake edge in the two seater canoe, discovering the untouched bays or fish for one of our prize rainbow trout. (A licence for fishing is required).
Walk your private bush trail behind your tent to view glow worms at night. A must is the 1.5hr Tarawera Trail bush walk to the Natural Bush Hot Pool for a beautiful geothermal soak. This trail takes you through magnificent Rata and Pohutakawa trees and groves of giant Mamaku ferns.
Or just do nothing and take the time to recharge.
As evening falls, enjoy sitting on the beach while viewing the starlit sky without any city lights to dim them. At the end of it all, tuck up in the comfortable bed to the gentle sound of the waves on the shore.
