Lake Rotorua brings the landscape right into the city. At the Rotorua Lakefront, wide paths and a curving boardwalk follow the shore, with views across the water to Mokoia Island.
The wide, flat paths are perfect for an easy stroll or for children exploring on bikes and scooters. Follow the boardwalk over the water, pause among the native landscaping or find a spot on the generous lawns and watch boats crossing the bay.
The lakefront playground makes this an easy place for families to settle in for the afternoon. Nearby food containers serve coffee, ice cream and casual bites. With picnic areas, terraced seating and plenty of open space, the lakefront has all the ingredients for a relaxed summer outing.
15 minutes from central Rotorua, Lake Tikitapu brings the best parts of a summer day together. Forested hills frame the blue water, sandy beaches invite you to stop for a swim, and the main reserve has plenty of space for picnics and play. Barbecues, tables, toilets and a playground make it easy to arrive in the morning and stay well into the afternoon.
The 5.5km Blue Lake Track circles the lake through native bush and the edge of Whakarewarewa Forest, providing shelter to the summer heat. Allow up to 2 hours at an easy pace, with extra time to pause at the viewpoints and beaches along the way. There are a few gentle climbs, but the reward is a changing outlook across the water as the track moves between forest and shoreline. Afterwards, cool down with a swim, launch a kayak or paddleboard, or find a sunny spot beside the beach. An ice cream from across the road at Blue Lake Top10 Holiday Park is a fitting end to the day.
Summer wellness continues beyond the lakes in the cool shade of Whakarewarewa Forest. Only around five minutes from central Rotorua, the Redwoods offer an easy change of pace when the day grows warm: softer light, cooler air and quiet tracks beneath trees reaching high above the forest floor.
The 2km Redwood Memorial Grove Track takes approximately 30 minutes and winds beneath towering Californian redwoods before crossing a boardwalk over an old thermal pond. For a longer wander, the 3.4km Waitawa Walk takes around an hour, continuing through stands of Douglas fir and beneath giant mamaku ferns.
There is something naturally restorative about walking here without rushing. Follow the coloured trail markers, listen for birds in the canopy and let the steady rhythm of the track slow the day down. Pair a shaded forest walk with a morning beside the lake, or come during the warmest part of the afternoon for a cool, peaceful summer reset.

5 minutes further along the road from Lake Tikitapu, Lake Tarawera feels wonderfully removed from the city. Native bush folds around the shoreline, deep, cool water stretches towards Mount Tarawera, and the view seems to change as the sunlight moves across the mountain.
For a gentle day beside the lake, head to Punaromia, also known as the Tarawera Landing, or find a place to settle at Stoney Point. Spread out a picnic, swim from the shore or launch a kayak for a quiet paddle. Scenic cruises, water taxis, fishing charters and boating offer other ways to explore, while simply sitting beside the water can be reason enough to visit.
Those ready for a bigger walk can follow the Tarawera Trail to Te Rātā Bay, also known as Hot Water Beach. The approximately 15km one-way track begins at Te Wairoa car park and winds through native bush, past quiet bays and along sections of the lakeshore.
At Te Rātā Bay, geothermal springs warm parts of the lakeshore, creating a memorable place to rest after the walk. Most walkers pre-book a water taxi from Hot Water Beach back to Punaromia. Advance bookings are essential.
20 minutes from Rotorua, Lake Rotoiti offers two different moods in one easy summer escape. Sheltered bays and forested shores invite quiet time on the water, while nearby Ōkere Falls brings the movement and sound of the Kaituna River.
The 1.2km Ōkere Falls Track follows the river through native bush, passing viewing platforms above rapids and waterfalls. Allow up to an hour for the return walk, especially if you stop to watch rafters moving through the white water below. The track is short and generally easy. Afterwards, slow the pace and stop for coffee or lunch at Okere Falls Store.
Back on Lake Rotoiti, summer can be as restful or active as you choose. Swim in a sheltered bay, explore by kayak, join a cruise or spend a quiet morning trout fishing. You can also travel across the lake to Manupirua Springs Hot Pools, which are accessible only by water. Reaching them by boat, kayak or water shuttle makes the journey across the lake part of the day.
15 minutes from central Rotorua, Lake Ōkāreka feels peaceful and tucked away. Wetlands, native bush, farmland and small beaches unfold around the shoreline.
For a gentle walk, start at the Acacia Road reserve and follow the Lake Ōkāreka Walkway to the outlet. The track is approximately 2.5km each way and crosses timber boardwalks through the wetland, passing native planting, a bird hide and Silver Beach. Allow around 1.5 hours for the return journey, with time to stop to take in the views.
Those who want to walk further can continue around the lake on the approximately 9–10km Lake Ōkāreka circuit. Allow around two to three hours for the full loop, which connects the Acacia Road walkway with forest tracks, the lakeside campground and the community trail to Boyes Beach.
Boyes Beach is an inviting place to finish or begin the day. Swim, launch a kayak or paddleboard, make use of the barbecues or settle onto the grass with a picnic while children explore the playground.
The 5.5km Blue Lake Track circles Lake Tikitapu. Allow up to two hours at an easy pace, plus extra time for beaches and viewpoints. There are a few gentle climbs.
