Run The Forest Itinerary

Friday: Arrival day

Ease into the weekend with a stroll along the lakefront boardwalk and through the nearby Government Gardens. The geothermal steam and historic landmarks set the scene for what's to come.

For lunch, head to the city centre. Zapata offers fresh takes on Mexican favourites, while Mr Wolf serves seasonal dishes in a relaxed setting. Or explore more local favourites and find the spot that suits your mood here.

You’ll also find great local stores worth exploring nearby.

In the afternoon, chase a bit of thrill. Skyline Rotorua gives you epic views and luge rides, while ZORB has been rolling visitors down hills in giant inflatable balls since the nineties.

As evening sets in, head to Poco for a warm, relaxed dinner with a modern twist, or try Ani’s for fresh, wholesome plates. If you have ended up at Skyline, Stratosfare is the move for panoramic views and a sunset to remember.

Get some rest, tomorrow’s the big day.

Saturday: Race day and time to recover

Start your day right. Grøunded has great coffee, Pantry d’Or brings the pastry fix, and Snug is perfect if you're heading to late rego at the Sir Howard Morrison Centre.

Then it is time to run. Take it all in. You are part of something special.

Afterwards, take it slow. Grab lunch at Fainting Goat, then unwind at Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa. Rooted in Ngāti Whakaue traditions, it’s the perfect place to pause and reset.

In the evening, join the Run the Forest afterparty at Pig & Whistle Historic Pub. It’s a local institution and a great place to celebrate. If you’re keen for a quieter finish, the softly lit Redwoods Treewalk & Nightlights offers calm and magic above the forest floor.

Sunday: Last bit of fun

Capers Café + Store has breakfast sorted. Then head off to Rotorua Canopy Tours for a zipline adventure through native forest, complete with stories, wildlife and conservation insight, a real highlight.

Follow it with a laid-back lunch at Eastwood by the forest, then stretch your legs one last time along the Ōkareka boardwalk.

Short on time? Pick up something tasty from River’s Catch before hitting the road. Their kai is fresh, generous, and full of flavour, just like the weekend.

Most activities and eateries can be booked online. Best to plan ahead, especially on event weekends.
