Pātaka Kai at Te Puia

Māori Cuisine / Central

Pātaka Kai at Rotorua’s iconic Te Puia offers a unique dining experience nestled in the heart of the incredible Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley.

For more than 170 years, Te Puia has welcomed manuhiri (visitors) to the historic 70-hectare geothermal reserve, demonstrating their commitment to the values of manaakitanga (hospitality) and kaitiakitanga (guardianship) which underpins everything they do.
The Māori cultural food and beverage experience you’ll enjoy at Pātaka Kai restaurant is no different. While dining, take in the spectacular geothermal views, including the frequent eruptions of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest active geyser, Pōhutu. Savour sophisticated dishes infused with fresh and flavourful indigenous herbs and spices such as horopito, piko piko, watercress, karengo, kawakawa and more.
The hāngī buffet is outstanding, offering an array of global cuisines and cooking styles (currently served to your table). Minted lamb, pork and chicken arrive straight from the hāngī pit onsite. Carved manuka smoked ham, Southern-style buttermilk fried chicken, rewana bread stuffing, soups, salads, steamed vegetables, rice and pasta dishes, prawns, garlic and watercress potato bake and more are also featured.
Be sure to save room for dessert where you’ll find treats like traditional steamed pudding, hot vanilla custard, chocolate mousse, pavlova, and ice cream with berry and kawakawa compote.

Open five days a week (Wednesday to Sunday) for coffee, sweet treats, lunch menu, hāngī buffet dinners on Fridays and lunch on Saturdays, and a la carte brunch on Sundays (served to your table). Please check the website for details.
Bookings are recommended, and access to the restaurant is always free.
