Enabling better understanding of visitor spend


Knowing what visitors spend money on and the seasonal variations of peaks and troughs throughout the year is important to businesses targeting their product offering and managing their cashflow and staff scheduling.

These two visitor spend dashboards below use data sourced from the electronic card transactions at Worldline merchant point of sale terminals. While both dashboards use data sourced from Worldline point of sale terminals, there are variances in how the data providers categorise spend that results in small variances in the values reported in each dashboard.

Rotorua 'Experience' Visitor Spend Dashboard

Data source: Marketview, Tourism Tool

  • This Rotorua specific dashboard segments data based on recreational 'Experience' (eg. Adventure Activities, Family Activities, Nature Activities etc) and is targeted at businesses offering visitor attractions/activities.
  • Also included in this 'Experience' dashboard is a market share calculator to enable Rotorua businesses to calculate their market share.
  • The advantage of this 'Experience' dashboard over the 'Product' dashboard below is the availability of daily data.

'Product' Visitor Spend Dashboard

Data source: Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment - Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates
Effective 8th February 2024 MBIE has suspended this data series until further notice. October 2023 is the most recently available data.

  • This dashboard segments data based on 'Product' (eg. Accommodation, Recreation, Dining etc) and is suitable for use by a broad audience. 
  • The advantage of this 'Product' dashboard over the 'Experience' dashboard above is the availability of data for each of the Regional Tourism Organisations (RTO), which enables the user selected RTO to be benchmarked against the national performance and ranked on a leaderboard. Additionally this 'Product' dashboard includes visitor spend across all payment channels (ie. online, cash, cards etc) versus the 'Experience' dashboard above which only reports electronic card expenditure at merchant point of sale terminals.
