Rotorua after dark: Steam, forest & firelight

Think Rotorua winds down after dinner? Think again. Once the sun drops, the city shifts into a different kind of magic: steaming hot pools under the stars, forest lights in the Redwoods, glowworms on the water, cultural evenings, live shows, night markets and family-friendly activities that run well into the evening.

Opening hours can change with the season, weather and event schedules, so it’s always worth checking directly before you head out. But if you’re looking for things to do in Rotorua at night, there’s plenty to keep your evening glowing.

Soak under the stars

#1 Secret Spot

Rotorua’s geothermal bathing experiences are some of the best ways to ease into the evening.

Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa is open late, with winter hours usually running until 10:30pm and summer hours extending to 11pm. It’s a beautiful option for a restorative night out, blending luxury spa treatments, mineral-rich waters and a deep connection to te ao Māori.

Polynesian Spa is another classic Rotorua evening soak, with pools open until 11pm. Settle into naturally heated geothermal water, take in the lakefront setting and let the day properly unwind.

Secret Spot Hot Tubs Rotorua is open until 10pm, making it a great choice for a relaxed evening in the forest. Soak in a private cedar hot tub, enjoy the forest-side setting, and keep the night easy with drinks and snacks close by.

In winter, Hell’s Gate Geothermal Park and Mud Spa adds a seasonal after-dark option with its Twilight Spa Experience. Available on selected Friday and Saturday evenings from 5pm to 8pm, the experience brings together geothermal mud and sulphur spas as evening settles over the Tikitere geothermal valley.

Walk through the Redwoods Nightlights

#2 Redwoods Nightlights

The Redwoods Treewalk Nightlights is one of Rotorua’s most iconic after-dark experiences. Suspended bridges weave through the towering redwood forest, illuminated by glowing lanterns and sculptural lighting.

It’s atmospheric, easy to enjoy at your own pace, and suitable for couples, friends and families. Hours vary by season, with winter opening generally until 9:30pm and summer evenings stretching much later.

Go searching for night-time nature

#3 Taiao Adventures

For something a little more adventurous, Real Rotorua offers a guided Nocturnal Adventure at a secret lakeside location. It’s a chance to experience Rotorua’s landscapes after dark, with the sounds, sights and stories that only come out at night.

Start times shift with the light: around 7:30pm in winter and 8:15pm in summer.

Taiao Adventures also offers a memorable glowworm adventure by kayak. Paddling at night brings a completely different perspective to Rotorua’s lakes and waterways, with glowworms adding a natural sparkle to the experience.

Experience Māori culture in the evening

#4 Te Pā Tū

Rotorua is one of the best places in Aotearoa New Zealand to connect with Māori culture, and several evening experiences bring together storytelling, kai, performance and geothermal landscapes.

At Te Puia, Te Pō is a powerful evening experience featuring cultural performance, traditional hospitality and the dramatic setting of the geothermal valley. In the colder seasons, Te Puia also offers Mārama, a special night-time experience that brings a fresh perspective to the valley after dark.

Te Pā Tū offers an immersive evening of culture, kai and seasonal storytelling. It’s more than a show; it’s a hosted experience shaped by manaakitanga, performance, food and the rhythms of the maramataka Māori lunar calendar.

Ride the Luge after dark

#5 Skyline Luge

In summer, Skyline Rotorua’s Twilight Luge adds a little extra magic to evenings. Ride the Gondola up Mt Ngongotahā as the city starts to glow below, pause for those wide-open views across Rotorua, then follow the lit-up Luge tracks back down through the dusk.

With glowing tunnels, fresh evening air and plenty of momentum, it’s a memorable choice for families, groups, or anyone who likes their night out with a bit of sparkle and speed.

Browse the Rotorua night market

Thursday nights bring the Rotorua Night Market to the city centre. It’s an easy, social way to spend an evening, with street food, local flavours, music and a relaxed community atmosphere.

Come hungry, wander slowly, and make a night of it.

Catch a show in the city

#6 SHMC

For a night with a bit of buzz, check what’s on at the Sir Howard Morrison Centre. Its programme is always evolving, with live concerts, musicals, theatre, comedy and community events bringing fresh energy to the city throughout the year.

Whether you’re in the mood for big music, a clever laugh, or a performance that catches you by surprise, there’s often something on the calendar worth building an evening around. Pair a show with dinner in the city centre and you’ve got an easy Rotorua night out, all within a short stroll.

Play mini golf with the bunnies

#7 Mini Golf

For a light-hearted after-dinner activity, Mini Golf Rotorua is open until 10pm and comes with a very memorable bonus: bunnies. It’s family-friendly, relaxed and just a little bit quirky in the best way.

It’s also a great option when you want something easy, fun and low-pressure at the end of the day.
