New Zealand’s premier Maori cultural centre and home of the world famous Pohutu Geyser, our people have called the geothermal valley of Whakarewarewa home for over 25 generations, come and be immersed in this natural landscape of gushing waters, steaming vents and boiling earth.
Set amidst 500 pools and 65 geyser vents, of which 7 are active, the stunningly majestic Pohutu takes centre stage. Meaning “Big splash or explosion”, Pohutu puts up a spectacular performance of pure power with regular eruptions that reach up to 30 meters, skyward.
Te Whakaruruhau is Te Puia’s area near the entrance to Te Puia. Conveniently located next to Te Heketanga a Rangi carved entranceway and Pataka Kai restaurant and bar which overlooks Pohutu geyser. This premium event venue has in floor heating and ceiling radiant heaters for added wamth, along with a sounds system, projector screens and lighting rigging. It is suitable for large functions, both seated or canapé’s.
Te Puia’s new Pātaka Kai offers diners spectacular geothermal views while they enjoy a range of Kiwi flavours, with both dine-in and grab-and-go options available.
Taking Te Puia’s commitment to manaakitanga (hosting) to another level, the development expands Te Puia’s seated dining capacity to approximately 650 people between the new Pataka Kai and existing Te Whakaruruhau, which sit adjacent to each other.
Overlooking the valley’s geothermal vista, with sweeping views of the world-famous Pōhutu Geyser, the Pataka Kai seats up to 350 people, including outdoor deck dining and indoor spaces which can be sectioned off to create private areas.
The menu has been created to be sophisticated, innovative and cutting-edge, infusing Māori flavours, cuisine and cooking styles, while still meeting the palate preferences of Te Puia’s diverse market.
Te Poari is situated next to the main kitchen, making it the ideal venue for functions where catering is important. With seating for 120 and a separate buffet area, Te Poari is Te Puia’s versatile gourmet restaurant.
