Visitor industry celebrates Chinese New Year

Rotorua’s visitor industry celebrated the Chinese New Year in Auckland this week at Destination Rotorua’s China-New Zealand Year of Tourism event.

More than 70 Chinese inbound tour representatives met with 18 Rotorua operators at Sky City on Tuesday night for an evening of product updates, networking and celebration around a shared goal of serving visitors from China.

Destination Rotorua Business Development Asia, Cynthia Fang, said: “This was the first time many of our local operators and the Auckland-based trade representatives had met and they all valued the opportunity to discuss shared opportunities and challenges.

“The event allowed us to showcase the strength that comes from a network of local operators working as a team with a common purpose.”

Cynthia also acknowledged the contribution from the guest speakers.

“We were honoured to have Chris Barber, Policy Advisor Tourism Policy, MBIE and Mark Frood, International Market Development Manager, Auckland International Airport attend to share their perspectives on the importance of the China-New Zealand Year of Tourism and the opportunities it offers for further cooperation between our organisations.”

She added: “Part of Destination Rotorua’s China market strategy involves developing the high-value Chinese FIT (free independent travel) market. The knowledge acquired and the relationships formed at this event will help us do that and we’d like to make it an annual gathering.”
