Networking event sells Rotorua to Chinese tourism market


Rotorua’s tourism industry celebrated the Chinese New Year in Auckland earlier this week at the annual Destination Rotorua Chinese New Year event.  
 
A group of 15 Rotorua tourism operators spent the evening networking with 80 Chinese inbound tour representatives who are responsible for promoting New Zealand to Chinese speaking travellers.
 
Destination Rotorua Chief Executive Michelle Templer said, “China is Rotorua’s fourth largest international visitor market and our role at Destination Rotorua is to work in partnership with our local tourism industry to develop that market even further. This annual event provides an excellent opportunity for Rotorua operators to showcase their products and update the Chinese travel trade on new developments. 
 
“The Chinese travel market is changing and we are seeing more of the high-value free independent travel visitor coming to Rotorua in place of large tour groups. That makes these industry connections even more important to ensure Chinese visitors can make informed decisions about where to go and what to do when they get here.”
 
The evening ended with festive fun, food and mingling as the group celebrated the Year of the Rat under the clear roof of the beautiful Glasshouse Morningside.
 
Last year, Chinese tourists contributed nearly $40m to the Rotorua economy.
