A destination fit for Royals

A destination fit for Royals

The eyes of the world were on Rotorua today as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex completed their tour of New Zealand with a packed Rotorua itinerary.

The Royal couple were treated to a local display of manaakitanga with an official powhiri at Ōhinemutu, followed by a hangi lunch. They then visited Rainbow Springs where they were invited to name two three-day old kiwi chicks, before meeting thousands of locals and other visitors who had gathered to greet them in the Government Gardens. The final stop was a visit to Redwoods Treewalk, where they also chatted with local mountain bikers.

Chief Executive of Rotorua Economic Development, Michelle Templer said: “It was a great privilege for Rotorua to host the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and to welcome the large media team accompanying them and the thousands of visitors hoping to catch a glimpse of the Royal couple.

“The visit was a wonderful opportunity to showcase Rotorua on an international stage as the media coverage of today’s activities will help to convey the beauty of Rotorua to audiences around the world. High profile visitors also create a long term halo effect from people wanting to visit a location to follow in their footsteps. The Royal couple’s movements attract intense interest in both the UK and the US, both of which are key tourism markets for Rotorua. Our Chinese trade partners are also very interested in the Royals’ itinerary and have been talking to us about replicating the Royal experience in their travel packages.”
