Cycling & Mountain Biking
If you’re a keen cyclist, there’s no better place to be than in Rotorua
Whether you’re a dedicated roadie or you prefer the smell of dirt beneath your luggy tyres, or if you’re a bikepacker or two-wheeled weekend tourist, Rotorua has everything to keep you grinning while pedalling.
If you know much about our city, you’ll know this place is a mecca for mountain bikers and we’re super proud of our MTB culture.
In 2015 Crankworx chose Rotorua as the site of their first international competition to be held outside of Canada. In 2019 the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) agreed that Rotorua is MTB heaven and renewed our four-year status as being one of the world’s best mountain biking destinations with their most prestigious gold-level Ride Centre™ status. There are only six other gold-level locations in the world.
You don’t need to be a seasoned rider to enjoy dirt gold in Rotorua. Thanks to Rotorua Trails Trust and an army of passionate volunteers, there are truly trails built for every type of rider, from beginner to experts, cruisey to extreme downhill, not-so-fit to pro athlete. No matter what time or day of the week, you’ll find friends and families on the trails. Mountain biking is certainly in our blood.
Riding is always free in Whakarewarewa Forest and the trails are always open. There’s no excuse not to try it! Head over to this page to find your perfect trail, then check out the advice on how to Ride Like a Local. Both articles were written by local MTB guru Gary “Gaz” Sullivan. He also advises you on Planning Your Biking Visit to Rotorua, and tips on winter riding. There are more articles on cycling on our website, and Ride Rotorua tells you everything you need to know to get started.
Road cycling enthusiasts looking to give the legs and lungs a solid workout while also seeing incredible scenery will love Te Ara Ahi. Nicknamed ‘Thermal by Bike’, the 50km trail takes you past geothermal areas, beautiful lakes and forests, and significant historical and cultural sites.
