The secret’s out – Rotorua’s Secret Spot Hot Tubs complex was officially opened yesterday by Rotorua Mayor Steve Chadwick.
A small group of invited guests braved the rain to attend the blessing conducted by John Tapiata from Tuhourangi and hear the story of Secret Spot’s origins from owner brothers Keith and Eric Kolver.
The idea of Secret Spot Hot Tubs was dreamt up in a rain storm on the Whakatane river when Eric and Keith were paddling their canoe through the heart of the Te Urewera ranges. In the cold rain and wild wind they dreamt of soaking in a hot tub with a glass of warm mulled wine. The idea grew and they decided to do something about it. After five years of planning, design and creation, Secret Spot opened their doors early October.
Keith Kolver said, “We wanted to make sure that the venue had been officially blessed and opened before the start of the busy summer season.
“This project has been a true labour of love. Eric and I designed everything and did the landscaping ourselves, with the aim of creating a place that locals feel is an extension of their own home. Secret Spot brings together so much of what Rotorua stands for: thermal bathing, forest adventures, water and amazing outdoor experiences”.
In her opening speech, Mayor Steve Chadwick said, “This is a beautiful place and a perfect addition to Rotorua’s spa, health and wellness offering. I have no doubt this will be a popular destination as there’s nothing else quite like it.”
Chief Executive of Destination Rotorua, Michelle Templer said, “We’re so pleased to have celebrated the opening with Keith and Eric. This stunning place is testament to the brothers’ vision and commitment to delivering an authentic and quality experience for visitors and locals alike. We wish them every success.”
