Where to ride
Seasoned mountain bikers will tell you riding in Whakarewarewa Forest is an absolute must. A network of nearly 200km of purpose-built trails awaits, offering trails for absolutely everyone, from beginners to professional downhill riders. There's even a kiddies' loop for the littlies and anyone feeling a bit wobbly to start.
Riding in the forest is always free and the trails are always open. There’s no excuse not to try it!

Whakarewarewa Forest, also known as the Redwoods, is a mecca for mountain bikers, with more than 180km of trails winding their way through native and exotic forest.

Hemo Gorge Trail - Te Ara Ahi
Hemo Gorge Trail is two-way, Grade 2, shared trail that takes cyclists and walkers off SH5 for access to the Waipa Mountain Biking car park. It is part of the Te Ara Ahi cycleway that continues to Rainbow Mountain. The trail is 1.5km from the Te Puia carpark to the Waipa car park (actual trail length to Waipa trailhead: 1.5km).
