      Distressed Or Deliberately Defiant

Professionals working in and with schools will be familiar with the complex demands created by students with challenging behaviours. Within this group there is a growing sub set of students who present as exceptionally difficult to manage. These kids are not the ‘usual’ behaviour support cases, there is something more complex underlying their situation which means that normal interventions don’t seem to have the same success. Assessing if their behaviour is based on distress or deliberate defiance is the starting point for developing more effective and targeted behaviour support interventions for this population. Grounded in attachment theory and neuroscience research, this seminar will explore the reasons why students who have experienced trauma and disrupted attachment behave the way they do in school. These children and young people often defy rules and authority, can be verbally and physically aggressive (without obvious triggers) and can provide many challenges when it comes to forming and maintaining constructive relationships. Many widely used behaviour management approaches and systems tend to have minimal impact and sometimes make things worse for these kids! During this 1-day seminar, Dr Howard will discuss a range of proven behaviour support strategies and resources that are more effective for these kids, including, but not limited to: - A model for effective behaviour management planning in schools - Practical strategies and approaches which are informed by neuroscience - Best practice for managing crisis, suspension and exclusion where attachment disorder is a variable influencing behaviour Dr Judith Howard is a senior lecturer and researcher with the Queensland University of Technology. She also has an extensive history with the State Education System in Queensland during which she has worked as a teacher, a school counsellor, a child and adolescent behaviour specialist and has held both Regional and State positions overseeing behaviour support processes in schools. This seminar is based on a successful training program that Dr Howard has run in Queensland over a number of years. It will have both a practical and theoretical focus and an emphasis on strategies that aim to help children and young people with attachment issues relate more adaptively to adults and peers, develop skills for emotional regulation and engage more effectively in their learning. This seminar is a must for all educators and other helping professionals who work with schools or receive behaviour management referrals from them.

Rotorua X Connect - Scaling a Tech Business

We have a special connect this month as part of the Taiopenga Hangarau - Rotorua Tech Festival 2018. Our Connect event provides an opportunity to meet new faces, be inspired from other people’s success and expand your networks. This event is all about scaling a tech business. We are extremely lucky to have Hadleigh Ford founder of the Bay of Plenty’s successful tech firm SwipedOn to share his journey starting a software-as-a-service company in 2013 through to securing $1 million of angel investment. *About Hadleigh & SwipedOn: In 2016, Hadleigh launched the SwipedOn visitor management app, a cloud-based iPad visitor management system that replaces paper-based visitor books, with no financial backing or a sales team. Two years in the app is now used in more than 2000 cities worldwide and the firm has exceeded $1 million of annual recurring revenue. They also raised $1million in private capital earlier this year. Callaghan Innovation will provide a “substantial” research and development grant, initially for a three-year term, and will contribute 20 per cent of all eligible spend that SwipedOn makes on research and development, up to $15m. To help keep up with demand, the company has recently employed five extra full-time staff, and in the next month they plan to open an office in Boulder, Colorado to help service its growing number of American clients. SwipedOn app success has been recognised with being a finalist in the 2018 NZ High Tech Awards and is a double finalist in Junes’s Bay of Plenty Export Awards. This free event is part of the Taiopenga Hangarau - Rotorua Tech Festival 2018, sponsored by Rotorua Lakes Council and delivered in partnership with Firestation and Rotorua X.
