From the 1840s to 1880s, Rotorua experienced a tourist boom when Europeans and others from around the world came to see a spectacular geothermal phenomenon – a vast expanse of silica formations known as the Pink and White Terraces, considered to be the Eighth Wonder of the World. The geothermal springs created cascading pools of hot, mineral-rich water perfect for bathing.
