Our Top 5 Family Favourites Things to do in Rotorua

It doesn't matter what the weather is, there are always plenty of things to do in Rotorua on the weekends. Here are just a few of our family favourites:

1. Whakarewarewa (Redwood) Forest
It’s a truly magnificent forest we have right on our doorstep. Getting out and going for a ride or walk amongst the magnificent trees helps cleanse the soul - it’s good exercise for everyone and is one of the best cures for cabin fever. Start from the Redwood Visitor Centre, or Waipa Carpark, pack some water and snacks and go explore!

2. Playgrounds
The weather’s nice, you’re in town, and the kids want to play. You probably know of Rotorua's Lakefront Volcanic Playground, Kuirau Park, and possibly the Government Gardens. But did you know that within a 10 minute drive of the CBD you could be at any of over 30 other playgrounds or reserves?

3. Cafes
There are loads of great coffee spots scattered around the city, not only the cafes but restaurants too. We’ll often meet up with friends and their kids for a catch-up on ‘neutral territory’ that way no one has to do any unnecessary cleaning. For the younger kids, Abracadabra has a great outdoor play area, while Capers and Third Place Cafe have dedicated rooms to keep them amused.

4. Indoor Options
If the rains pouring down and you want to get the kids out of the house there are loads of indoor options too. The Rotorua Museum is a no-brainer, it’s free for locals as has continually changing exhibitions. Playtopia and Flip Out have you covered on the same street for young and older kids.

5. Lakes
They don’t call us the lake district for nothing you know, we have some beautiful lakes around us. Some are great for fishing, some are great for watersports and swimming, some have great walking tracks fully or partially around them, so you don’t have to get your feet wet if you don’t want to.
