Rotorua's latest movie star role hits the cinemas in August

The Disney classic is the adventure of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend - a lovable dragon named Elliot. Most of the forest scenes for Pete’s Dragon were shot in Rotorua’s spectacular Redwood Forest.

Known for its majestic Californian redwoods, Whakarewarewa Forest, as it is also known, makes it the ideal double for an American logging town.

The forest is a popular destination for walking, hiking and mountain biking in Rotorua as well as the home of the Redwood Treewalk - Rotorua's newly opened eco-experience - the first of its kind for New Zealand.
