Family Friendly FUN in the water

There are loads of family friendly options for a winter getaway in Rotorua. The local Aquatic Centre is a great way to spend an afternoon or morning. They have indoor and outdoor pools and spas, a lazy river and a playground. Bring lunch or a few sausages to throw on the barbie!

25 minutes south of Rotorua is Waikite Valley Thermal Pools, with heated changing facilities, a cafe and great options for kids including a toddlers' beach area.  

For an extra treat, catch a Totally Tarawera Water Taxi to the secluded Hot Water Beach. Tucked away on the shore of Lake Tarawera, the hot spring trickles down a small stream and into the Lake. Build a hole in the sand or a rock pool to soak in.
 

Enjoy Rotorua's free winter wonders

Located within walking distance of Rotorua's CBD and next to the Rotorua Aquatic Centre is Kuirau Park. Walking tracks around the park lead to an abundance of geothermal vents, bubbling mud pools and steaming lakes. There is a popular play park for the kids and bring along a towel to enjoy the free thermal foot pools. On Saturday mornings you will find the busy Kuirau Park Market here. Great to stock up on fruit and veges, knick knacks and with lots of breakfast options.

Rotorua is famous for its natural geothermal hot springs and hot pools with many freely accessible. Discover Kerosene Creek, flowing through natural bush with a 2 metre waterfall and a quiet pool of hot water. If you are heading south from Rotorua, include this in your trip as it is only a short drive off the main highway near Rainbow Mountain, on the way to Taupō.
 

Winter water adventure

It's not all soaking and relaxing in winter in Rotorua - the region has the warmest river in New Zealand, the Kaituna, so there is plenty of reason to try White Water Rafting. Featuring the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world, you are going to want to do this again and again.
