Kiwi Outback

Winston Fleming was the first farmer in NZ to fence off native forest in order to protect the rare kokako and other native birds. The New Zealand Wildlife Service rated this forest the best in the Bay of Plenty for bird life.
Join Winston to enjoy a strong viewing of the rare kokako, hawk, wood-pigeon, tui, fantail, robin, bellbird, waxeye, morepork, whitehead, grey warbler, tomtit and various finches. There is also accommodation available if you want to experience the beautiful early morning birdsong of the kokako. Kiwi Outback is situated in Kaharoa, 25 minutes drive from Rotorua.

Take a guided walk through our sub-tropical rain forest, home of the rare Kokako. Try a bush barbecue with wild pork sausages, venison steak and billy tea. Stay overnight in a bush camp surrounded by glow-worms. We can also take you on hunting trips for deer, goats, possums and rabbits.
