Kawarau Jet - Mokoia Island

The Island is a wildlife sanctuary and is home to approximately 25 Kiwi, 5 endangered Species, 20 protected species and over 40 common species, which now call it home. The birds flourish in this predator free environment, filling the canopy with their songs. 

The island's foreshores are littered with natural, geothermal springs, including the famous Hinemoa’s Hot Pool. This hot water seeps into the lake providing swimmers and bathers with a very unique experience.

There are a number of walking tracks around the Island which wind their way up to the summit and a 360 degree unobstructed, breath-taking view of the surrounding area.

BIRD WATCHING

A number of endangered species have been introduced to the Mokoia Island sanctuary including weka (wood hen), North Island robin (toutouwai) and saddleback (tieke). You may also see native birds such as the pukeko, papango, kokako and tui.

MAORI CULTURE

Hear the stories of Te Arawa iwi, the famous love story of Tutanekai and Hinemoa and the events that have shaped Rotorua into the cultural capital of New Zealand. 

WALK

Chose from a number of tracks that wind through various parts of the Island and up to the summit whilst being surrounded by wildlife, native bush and stunning scenery. 

Hot pools

Soak your feet in the hot pools or enjoy a swim in the lake .

Located in the middle of Lake Rotorua, Mokoia Island is the site of one of our country's most famous love stories and the home of some of our most notorious Maori warriors and tribes.

It is of particular interest to geographers as it is a Rhyolite Lava Dome rising up to 180 metres above the lake surface. This beautiful and tranquil Island features heavily in in many local stories and historical events.
