Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park & Kiwi Encounter

Set amidst a beautiful environment of native bush, the Rainbow Springs Nature Park has a wonderful combination of natural elements and species in one setting; on view during the day and now at night.

• Clear cold water springs, home to four species of wild trout including Rainbow, Brown, Tiger and Brook
• New Zealand’s national icon, the kiwi, on display in our nocturnal house by day and in our outdoor walk-through kiwi enclosure at night – unique to Rotorua and New Zealand
• Outstanding display of native plants and trees along pathways including excellent botanical information signs
• Both adult and juvenile tuatara, New Zealand’s ancient “dinosaur” (In Rotorua, they are only found at Rainbow Springs)
• Wide range of New Zealand’s endangered and protected birds in free flight aviaries including kaka, kea, kereru, kakariki, weka, pukeko, tui and White Faced heron

Renowned for its work in conservation, particularly with raising kiwi chicks for release back into the wild, many of Rainbow Springs’ native species are part of captive management programmes, and some are part of breeding programmes. Historically it has been a place where local residents bring injured birds for expert care and rehabilitation. Some have stayed on.
