  • Redwoods Walking Tracks
    On this popular track you can meander through the breathtaking Californian Redwoods which were planted in 1901. These towering trees stand at approximately 197 feet (60 metres) tall and create a wonderful shelter, along with the under planted European Larch, for a diverse range of native plants and birds. Another feature of this track is the board walk, which takes you across the old thermal pond, home to a variety of exotic aquatic plant life. Admire these magnificent trees which are dedicated to the memory of the men of the New Zealand Forest Service who died in the two World Wars.

  • Tarawera Falls
    Tarawera Falls is another of the gems of Lake Tarawera that is hard to access but well worth the effort. Either get a water taxi from The Landing at Lake Tarwera or walk in from Kawerau. The spectacular Tarawera Falls - where water surges out of fissures in a large rock cliff-face surrounded by native bush. The cliff is the end of an ancient rhyolitic lava flow that is believed to have poured from an erupting Mt Tarawera about 11,000 years ago. An abrupt stop to the flow produced these high cliffs.

  • Lakes Drive
    Drive out and experience the lakes of Rotorua. In total there are 13 major lakes and they make for a great afternoon exploring. There are two distinct lakes areas with road access - the drive out to Lake Tarawera which incorporates the Blue Lake, Green Lake, Lake Okareka and Lake Tarawera. Once out at Lake Tarawera, enjoy a coffee at the landing cafe, go for a swim in the beautiful clear waters or lounge about on one of the many sandy beaches. The second lakes area incorporates Lakes Rotoiti, Rotoma and Rotoehu and are located along State Highway 33. Relax on sandy beaches, walk amongst native forests or take the 20 minute detour to Lake Okataina and explore a real hidden New Zealand gem.

  • Kuirau Park
    Located next to the central business district, Kuirau Park is the site of the city's most recent geothermal eruption. Walk between bubbling mud pools, steaming holes, crater lakes and sulphur vents. There are also two hot pools where visitors can soak their feet. People are advised to stick to the tracks for safety reasons. The playground is a great place to take the children and a weekly farmers market (Saturday morning) offers the opportunity to buy fresh local produce.
