For the year ending December 2007 there were 2.5 million international visitors arrivals to New Zealand. The top six source markets were Australia (950,000 arrivals), U.K. (293,000 arrivals), U.S.A. (216,000 arrivals), Japan (122,000 arrivals), China (121,000 arrivals) and South Korea (99,000 arrivals). The Ministry of Tourism forecasts that international visitor arrivals will increase 4.0% per annum to 3.2 million arrivals by 2013.

New Zealand residents are estimated to have taken 34.6 million day trips and 17.6 million overnight trips within New Zealand for the year ending December 2007. In total they spent an estimated 52.6 million nights visiting New Zealand regions away from their home. The Ministry of Tourism forecasts that New Zealand total day and overnight trips will increase 0.8% per annum to 55.0 million trips by 2013.

Tourism expenditure in New Zealand for the year ending March 2006 was estimated at $18.6 billion, including $1.3 billion in goods and services tax (GST). International visitor expenditure was $8.3 billion and domestic visitor expenditure was $10.3 billion.

Tourism’s economic contribution to the New Zealand economy for the year ending March 2006 was estimated at $12.8 billion of value-added activity or 8.9% of Gross Domestic Product.

Employment in tourism in New Zealand for the year ending March 2006 was estimated at 108,600 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees and indirectly tourism provided a further 74,500 FTEs. In total tourism generated 183,100 FTEs or 9.9% of total employment in New Zealand.
