Local athlete scores highly in world champs

November 4, 2008

Destination Rotorua Tourism Marketing (DRTM) congratulates Rotorua athlete Monique Avery, who came second in the under-20 female group in the World Xterra Championships in Hawaii last month.

Monique was the fourth female amateur to finish and the 20th woman overall (including professional competitors). She says it was the hardest race of her life.

“I was gutted I didn’t win but I did my best on the day."

Monique was sponsored by DRTM.

“It’s really awesome to know I have the support from my home town,” Monique says.

“It was such an awesome opportunity to promote Xterra Rotorua.”

The Rotorua Xterra event is held annually and comprises an 11km swim in the Blue Lake, 21km walk or run and a 26km mountain bike ride. It will be on April 18 next year.
