Rotorua Noir

NZ's First Ever Crime Writing Festival. Rotorua Noir is the first crime writing festival to be held in New Zealand and will coincide with the tenth year of the prestigious Ngaio Marsh Award. It is a will bring together for the first time the cream of the New Zealand crime writing scene along with some serious talent from overseas. Authors appearing include Michael Robotham and Paul Hardisty from Australia, Lilja Sigurdardottir from Iceland, Kati Hiekkapelto from Finland and Alex Gray from Scotland as well as New Zealand's own Paul Cleave, Fiona Sussman, Alan Carter and Vanda Symon. It is time to celebrate New Zealand crime writing and the people behind the books we all love so much. The festival will be an outstanding opportunity for members of the public to meet their favourite authors and hear what goes on during the creative process that takes an idea from its inception to the page. Over three days we will be holding creative writing workshops for aspiring authors, two days of panel discussions featuring crime writers from as far away as Scotland, Iceland and Finland as well as some fantastic one-on-one interviews. There will be a short story competition for local writers to show us what they can do with the winner getting to read from their work at the festival. We will be aiming to include the local community of Rotorua as much as possible in what will be a great event for the city.

The Ryman Healthcare Season of The Nutcracker

Christmas comes but once a year, and for the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Christmas 2018 will be extra special, as we stage a national tour of The Nutcracker for the first time since 2010. Offering festive enchantment for all ages, this is a Christmas gift for all the family. Our story begins on Christmas Eve, as Tchaikovsky’s fairy-tale music fills the air and Clara is given a nutcracker doll by her mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer. Falling asleep on the sofa, she dreams a Christmas dream of magic and romance… As the clock strikes midnight, the drawing room is transformed into a battleground. Skirmishes break out between toy soldiers, led by the brave Nutcracker, and the motley crew of mice who emerge from the shadows of the skirting boards. All seems lost, but clever Clara saves the day, and the handsome Nutcracker Prince sweeps her away on a snowy journey to the enchanted Marzipan Castle. Welcomed to the magical kingdom by the Sugar Plum Fairy, Clara and her Prince are captivated by dances representing tea, coffee, chocolate, marzipan and flowers. The dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy brings the entertainment to a climax in one of ballet’s most beloved showpieces. As the night ends, Clara awakes on Christmas morning, knowing that the sweetest memories are made with those whom we love.
