Kuranui is welcomed into the Rotorua Convention Bureau

December 8, 2011

The Rotorua Convention Bureau is delighted to welcome Kuranui Lodge as a silver member. As well as offering luxury lodge accommodation and hunting, the lodge can cater for groups up to 100 guests for lunches and dinners at this unique offsite dining venue.

Located in the Kaimai-Mamaku Ranges, architecturally designed by New Zealand architect Tim Gisler, and built by Mort and Mel, Kuranui Lodge is the first of its kind in New Zealand using "straw bale" construction. It is a sustainable, breathing structure at peace with the environment. Luxurious and rustic, the lodge is the perfect retreat while being lavished with country hospitality, feasting on outstanding cuisine complimented by some of New Zealand’s finest wines.

Hosts Mort and Mel built Kuranui Lodge with pride and a passion that comes from fulfilling a lifetime dream. They milled the tons of magnificent native timbers within the structure from trees brought down by a huge storm that wreaked havoc in the area several years ago. Thick and cosy, the highly insulating and subtly curving straw bale walls ensure a natural relaxing ambience. The restored old handcrafted rimu windows add a timeless rustic beauty as do the huge hardwood poles that support the wide verandas. Indoors a roaring fire in the massive stone fireplace is alluring and is the perfect place for a beverage, story telling and sharing the day’s adventures.
