Lake, bush and rural retreats nestle in secluded spots while 13 hotels and more than 90 motels and motor inns, many within easy walking distance of the CBD, add colour and character to our cityscape.

Rich, sprawling farmland embraced by 15 fishable lakes act as a natural catalyst for many of Rotorua's farm and homestay establishments. From family hosted accommodation through to discreet luxury bed and breakfasts, there are endless opportunities to experience Rotorua life as locals know it.

A backpackers' paradise, Rotorua has some of the liveliest hostels to be found in the country. Many have their own bars and a relaxed café atmosphere where everyone is welcome.

Holiday parks and camping grounds are also part of Rotorua's established accommodation sector with the majority located close to town or near lakes.

Visitors looking for  an indigenous perspective to their Rotorua visit  should seek out  opportunities to experience personal interaction with Rotorua Maori, who are mainly of Te Arawa descent. Aside from the array of very popular Maori cultural experiences; options include booking a product that includes a Maori guide/ambassador, using Maori operated businesses, having dinner with a Maori family, choosing a homestay with a Maori host or even an overnight stay on one of the maraes in the region.

Perhaps best described as a Maori reserve, marae hold special significance for Maori - it is their ancestral home, a place where their iwi (tribe) meet for significant events both happy and sad, and the centre of their cultural life.

Part and parcel of living in New Zealand's 'thermal city' is the accessibility to natural hot pools. What better way to end the day than to take a relaxing soak in a naturally heated mineral spa. Most accommodation outlets in Rotorua offer guests access to either their own private mineral pool or a naturally heated spa as part of the tariff. However, if your choice of accommodation doesn't provide this, there are a number of spa options open to the public every day of the week.

Most hotels and motels have a 110 volt AC outlet for electric shavers but other electrical appliances in N.Z. use 240 volts (50 hertz) so overseas visitors may need an adapter.

It is wise to book ahead, especially in peak summer or school holiday periods. Our seasons are: Summer (Dec- Feb), Autumn (March-May), Winter (June-Aug) and Spring (Sept-Nov).
