Backpackers

No longer the domain of the 18 to 35 set, backpacker lodges and hostels are a great option for travellers of all ages. Staying at a backpackers is often the most cost-effective option so money saved gets spent on experiences rather than accommodation.

Other benefits are the (usually) inter-city location, friendly camaraderie that develops in sharing kitchen, bathroom and lounge facilities (much like a holiday park); and the ‘cross-pollination' of cultures, ideas and travel experiences. The chance to have fun and enjoy yourself with like-minded visitors is another major bonus.

Rotorua has a great line up of backpacker options, some with swimming pools, attached bars and internet connections. Shared and private rooms are available with a number also offering en-suite and women only options.
